Progress on Webshots site

I've been steadily moving down the albums. I'm figuring out what tags to apply to the images in the Queen Mary album. I posted lots of images of her in gorgeous jewels in that album, what she is famous for today. But its a fashion history album, so I'm trying to get as much dress into posted images as possible. I deleted several images of Queen Mary for that reason. I also added some images of her in day dress. Portraits of her in evening or court dress and jewels seem to be much more common than images of her in day dress.

I did the same to images in the Alexandra-Dagmar-Thyra album, but there are lots of images of Queen Alexandra in day dress as compared to Queen Mary. It is amazing to see dresses "as worn" on gorgeous women with unlimited clothing budgets compared to fashion plates of the eras.

When I'm done with the Queen Mary album, the next album will be recent past and present. It will not be easy locating the sources ("sourcing") many of those images.

I had not heard of Le Diable Rose until I saw these images on eBay. All but the last and Diable Rose-58 appear to be from around 1860 - the height of the crinoline era. Diable Rose-58 is from the late 60s with a non-pointed waist and conical shape. The last image is of one of Queen Victoria's closest friends, the Duchess of Sutherland.

Queen Marie of Romania and The Great Recession of 2008

While running through and editing the chaotic images of Queen Marie of Romania on Webshots, I found reference to a fellow named Carter Glass who had helped her and Romania out. We're suffering from the loss of Carter Glass' greatest work, the Glass-Steagall Act.

This is what I posted from Wikipedia to Webshots - with additions:

More Wikipedia - Queen and Queen Mother - In 1914, Carol I died and Ferdinand ascended the throne of Romania. Crown Princess Marie then became styled Her Majesty The Queen of Romania. Due to World War I, they were not crowned as king and queen until 1922.* During the war she volunteered as a Red Cross nurse to help the sick and wounded and wrote a book, My Country to raise funds for the Red Cross, but these were by no means her most notable contributions to the war effort. With the country half-overrun by the German army, she and a group of military advisers devised the plan by which the Romanian army, rather than retreating into Russia, would choose a triangle of the country in which to stand and fight; and through a letter to Loïe Fuller she set in motion the series of events that brought a timely American loan to Romania, providing the necessary funds to carry out the plan. (Fortuitously, the young woman from the U.S. embassy who delivered the letter to Fuller was the former ward (legal) of Newton D. Baker, by this time serving as U.S. Secretary of War. Fuller and the young woman traveled from Paris to Washington, DC and secured an audience with Baker who, along with U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Carter Glass, arranged. (President Clinton worked with Republicans to repeal the Glass-Steagall Act named, in part, after Carter Glass, a major step towards the present global recession. The Glass-Steagall Act set limits on banks and financial services firms that were undone by the repeal. Clinton also failed to regulate "derivatives." Add years of non-enforcement of what regulations were left over by the Capitalist dogma's answer to Tovarich Suslov, George W. Bush, and you have the makings of a real mess. - gogm.)

Tovarich Suslov refers to Communist dogmatist Mikhail Anderyevich Suslov (Wikipedia's spelling of his name). The inflexibility of dogma played a major role in ending the USSR and it might be finishing off the USA. Different "ism," but same result.

I'm a little short of halfway through the 1600s. There are images of the Mancini sisters in the album. One could say they were sporty Italian imports that Cardinal Mazarin brought with him to secure good marriages. It often didn't work. I'm having trouble distinguishing one Mancini from another.

Its amazing how much artwork is out there without provenance information! It takes real scholarship to exhume provenance information sometimes, when it can be found.

Completion of 1500s Album at Webshots

I finished attempting to get source information (date, artist, and museum/location) for the Webshots postings. I also checked the tags and added nationality (French, English, etc.), if known, and date, if known, to the tags. The nationalities "Scottish" and "English" are called "British" after 1603.

The names are always: date (if available), subject name (Mary Tudor, etc.), artist (if known) and the museum/location (if known) in parentheses.

Now to do the rest of the albums!

	1890s evening gowns at the Victoria and Albert Museum The background of the paler gown is unknown, but their description of the black gown is: "Black Silk Velvet Evening Gown 1894 To view this video, you will need to download and install the Apple QuickTime™ Player Silk velvet, embroidered with glass beads and sequins, trimmed with tulle, embroidered net in a design of butterflies applied to the skirt and bodice, lined with silk, the bodice strengthened on the inside with whalebone Stern Bros New York About 1894 This sumptuous evening dress has huge puffed sleeves which were highly fashionable during the mid 1890s. One of the advantages of these large sleeves was to make the waist look small by comparison. The shoulder width was counterbalanced by the size of the skirt, which widened at the hem - an effect that was achieved by gores, shaped panels, box pleats in the back of the skirt and stiff interlining. The skirt and bodice is embroidered in beads with exquisite butterfly and ribbon motifs. Butterflies were popular in 1894. The Queen in April illustrated an example by the couturier Felix.The label 'Stern Bros., West 23rd , New York' is stitched to the waistband. Stern Bros., one of the largest New York department stores of the time, imported models of Parisian fashions for copying." 	Worth evening gown 1900 Photo by gogm in May-June 2000. As with any tourist photo, reflection glare is an issue. This was done on film, flashless. I inhaled and held on to the camera for a time exposure. This is their description of it, "Silk velvet, trimmed with diamante; petticoat, sleeves and neck edgings are modern replacements in the style of Worth Worth Paris 1900 Museum No. T.459-1974 Charles Frederick Worth (1825-1895) was a celebrated Parisian couture dressmaker. He was born in Bourne, Lincolnshire, and started working at the age of 12 in a draper's shop in London. Eight years later he moved to Paris, where he opened his own fashion house in 1858. He was soon patronised by the Empress Eugenie and her influence was instrumental to his success. His clothes, admired for their elegance and fine workmanship, became an important symbol of social and financial advancement.This dress was worn by Princess Nicholas of Greece. Her grandson, the Duke of Kent, gave it to Sir Cecil Beaton, who was then collecting fashionable dress for his 1971 exhibition, Fashion: An Anthology. As with other evening gowns of the period, its original trimmings were very delicate and have been lost. The petticoat and neck edging have been carefully reconstructed from old photographs of Worth designs." I posted several galleries of images of her and one of balls held during her reign, focusing on the time before Prince Albert died (14 December 1861). I think everybody can form an image of Queen Victoria in dark widow's weeds. These images show what she wore before then. Because of the time focus, images from the famous Devonshire House ball are not included.

There should be no problems with making copies, at least I hope not.

Organizing these took a long time!
